Is Avigdor Lieberman the Arabs

2010年9月8日

Washington Watch

Even those who expected friction between the Obama and Netanyahu governments over pursuing Israeli-Arab peace were surprised that it came so quickly. About 20 minutes by one count.

cheap_Chanel Handbags_shop_usa_uk_23

That's how long it took Israel's new foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, to scrap the U.S.-led Annapolis peace talks on two-state solution to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, take the Golan Heights off the negotiating table with Syria and reject the longstanding concept of land for peace, threatening a US.-Israel rift if his government turns that rhetoric into policy.

Lieberman's pronouncements, along with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of the two-state approach and word that he is reconsidering support for the international Road Map for Mideast peace, could set Jerusalem and Washington on a collision course.

President Barack Obama quickly fired a warning shot across Bibi's bow. "Let me be clear: the United States strongly supports the goal of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security," he said on Monday. That was followed by an announcement that special Mideast envoy George Mitchell will be going to the region next Monday "to advance the goal of the two-state solution."

Likud minister Gilad Erdan quickly shot back mat "Israel does not take orders from Obama." Just cash.

Lieberman's inaugural speech ignited what could become the worst crisis in US.-Israel relations in nearly 20 years.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry official told me, "Is he saying what Bibi really thinks but won't say out loud? We don't know, but so far Bibi hasn't rebuked or retracted" anything.

Lieberman, who was Netanyahu's chief of staff during his first term as prime minister, said concessions to the Arabs "just invite pressure, and more and more wars. If you want peace, prepare for war."

With declarations like that and his reputation as a racist who wants to drive out Israel's Arab citizens, Lieberman may be the best thing that has happened to pro-Arab lobbying in Washington since Yasser Arafat died.

But for the Jews, he's bad news.

A recent survey for J Street, conducted by Jim Gerstein, a Democratic strategist, showed Obama is "considerably more popular" among American Jews than Netanyahu by a 73-58 margin, and Lieberman's views are "resoundingly rejected by American Jews."

The cornerstone of pro-Israel lobbying for more than 60 years has been Israel's yearning for peace in the face of Arab threats to destroy iL Israel, we've been taught and have taught others, is willing to take great risks, endure major sacrifices and accept painful compromises while the other side has insisted on its unrealistic and uncompromising demands.

Israel has ridden that image, despite occasional ups and downs, to a position of great strength in America and especially on Capitol Hill.

After Lieberman's declarations and Netanyahu's so-far lack of a convincing commitment to peace, Israel risks being branded an obstacle to peace.

There is a hard-core element in the Jewish community that will support Israel do or die, but the J Street data shows fewer and fewer under 30 will, said Gerstein.

Their grandparents forged their ties with Israel during the

Irwin church set to buy commun

2010年9月8日

Leaders of Calvary Baptist Church in Irwin have a sales agreement for the former Oak Hollow Community Center in North Huntingdon and intend to continue to offer community-oriented services at the site.

The nearly 13-acre property off Morris Avenue could become the site of a new church after the property is paid off, according to Pastor Mark Shaffer.

Church leaders approached North Huntingdon's zoning hearing board Tuesday night to reveal some of their goals for the land.

The community center, which lost its YMCA charter status three years ago, closed at the end of March. The property, which was part of the site for the former Nike missile base, also has a building that was used as a senior citizens center.

Shaffer said there was an 18-month search to find property in the area because the topography of the Irwin site isn't conducive for an expansion.

Church members are involved in a variety of community activities, from hospice care and children's ministries to adult tap-dancing classes.

"We're looking for additional spaces to grow into," Shaffer said. "We'd like to continue the vision that the Y offered for the community."

Board members last night agreed to grant the church a special exception so it may continue to use the site for community-oriented programs but will restrict the property from being used for residential or business purposes.

"This seems like an excellent plan for the use of this property," board member John Skooglund said.

Also last night, the board gave Lynette and Lawrence Moisey approval to operate a bed-and-breakfast in their home, the historic Larimer House in Circleville.

The board granted the Moiseys a special exception so they can use three of the home's bedrooms as guest rooms. The Moiseys formerly ran a craft store in the house, which dates to about 1790.

According to the Norwin Historical Society, William Larimer Jr., one of the founders of Denver, had lived there, and notable visitors included William Henry Harrison and Aaron Burr.

Judge orders $28,000 bail for

2010年9月7日

A Palm Beach County Circuit judge Thursday added $28,000 bail for a Riviera Beach police detective hit this week with new forgery Gucci wallet charges.

On Tuesday, the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office added 56 counts to the 96 filed in December against Lee Ann Schneider.

The original counts of forgery and official misconduct in 48 cases, claim Schneider, 42, forged the signature of her then- supervisor, Detective Sgt. Pat Galligan, on arrest affidavits and other papers so he could claim overtime.

The new charges allege that between 2007 and 2009, Schneider falsified property receipts or evidence cards in 28 cases. She's charged with forgery and misconduct in 28 Juicy Couture shoes cases.

State attorney spokeswoman Sarah Alsofrom said this week that all but three of the first 48 cases have been resolved but could not immediately provide details. But the new charges call into question the "chain of custody" paper trail and jeopardize the chances of convictions in the 28 related cases, sources contended.

Lawyer Tom Gano has argued that Schneider never placed misinformation in narratives. Gano said Thursday that Schneider has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Staff writer Julius Whigham II contributed to this story.

Jets' Hot Line together again

Golden Jet, Nilsson, Hedberg promoting DVD, raising funds

Dior lady handbag

The press conference didn't begin until the Golden Jet arrived. Naturally.

"Gentlemen!" Bobby Hull announced, as he strode into the room. "Prefer blondes."

Everybody laughed. Pure Hull.

It was a meeting room halfway up the Radisson Hotel Wednesday morning, where for the first time in over 30 years the heart, soul and history of the original Winnipeg Jets convened together in the city that made them whole.

Bobby Hull. Anders Hedberg. Ulf Nilsson. The holy trinity of Jets hockey.

All three were are in town this week for two reasons; to promote the premiere of a DVD documentary recounting the rebel league's early years -- WHA Legends: Remembering the Winnipeg Jets -- and to attend fundraising events for the Amadeus Steen Foundation, the brainchild of former Jets star Thomas Steen and son Alexander, now a productive member of the St. Louis Blues.

But the gathering was not only emotional, but a sentimental glimpse at the passage of time, how some bonds never break, even if the once immortal bodies do.

The last time Hull, Hedberg and Nilsson were together in Winnipeg, the latter two were headed off to the NHL and the big lights of Broadway, still in their 20s. Hull was already in his late 30s, with only a few games left in him.

They were all relatively young back then. But time plays no favourites. Before the press conference began, Hull said to no one in particular, "Now it's time to get my shoes laced up."

So a man once known for his brute strength and blistering speed put a foot up on a stool and barked out, "Ulfie!"

Without hesitation, the 60-year-old Nilsson whisked over to tie the Golden Jet's shoes. Still with the teamwork.

"Knees or hips?" someone asked Hull.

"Knee," he replied, resigned, "and everything else." Hull paused for a second, thanking his old linemate, then uttered. "It's awful to get to 71. There was a time we thought we were infallible."

Yes, there certainly was. It was back in 1974, in fact, when Hedberg and Nilsson first arrived in Winnipeg, recruited by Dr. Gerry Wilson, a former Montreal Canadien who went on to sire one NHL son (Carey) and one NHL grandson (Colin).

That fall, the Jets held a practice at the St. James Arena with the University of Manitoba Bisons, and the first pages of hockey history were written on a sheet of ice in Winnipeg.

Hull was tooling around with the puck in front of the net. Hedberg and Nilsson, two unknown youngsters from Sweden, stepped on the ice.

Hull was 35 and looking for a spark. The Bisons' head coach yelled out, "Bobby, go with the Swedes!"

At this moment, recounting the story, Hull's voice begins to break. "Hold on," he says, as the tears start coming. "I get a little broken up here because... I never saw two kids come out of the corner like they were shot out of a cannon. And we went on the ice and bing, bang, bing, it was in the net. Not one time did we not put the puck in the net."

After the practice, Hull was asked about the Swedes. "I told them," he recalled, "that this year there will be three putting them in the net and four fishing them out." Chloe handbags

2010年9月3日

The parent company of Falmouth based pump manufacturer Watson- Marlow has announced a Pounds 2.1 million acquisition in Australia. Spirax-Sarco has bought the business assets and goodwill relating to the exclusive sale of Watson-Marlow and Bredel Pumps (WMB) products, from its local distributor in Australia tiffany jewelry sale and New Zealand. The deal was made through Spirax-Sarco's subsidiary company, Watson-Marlow Pty.

The deal is worth A$3.8 million (Pounds 2.1m), of which A$2.2m (Pounds 1.2m) was paid on June 30, the balance payable within three months.

The existing distribution agreement had given WMB a "good share" of the important mining market in Australia, which it now expects to grow.

Pulsed Power Breakthrough Brig

2010年9月3日

Team Working at Sandia National Laboratories Discovers New Pathway to Commercial Fusion Power

SAN DIEGO -- Prospects for low-cost, clean energy through nuclear fusion just got brighter, thanks to a lucky discovery at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. A research team led by noted physicist Dr. Franklin Felber has taken a big step towards meeting two of the greatest tiffany silver jewelry technological challenges of pulsed power for fusion 鈥?current amplification and pulse compression. The team鈥檚 discovery is published today in Physical Review Letters.

"These are surprising and unexpected results and if confirmed by future experiments could shorten the time scale and lower costs to reach pulsed power-driven nuclear fusion," said Dr. Michael Cuneo, Manager of the Radiation and Fusion Experiments Group at Sandia.

For almost 40 years, research teams around the world have been pursuing energy production by tiny nuclear explosions lasting only billionths of a second within a reactor. This approach, called inertial confinement fusion (ICF), requires that tremendous power be concentrated almost instantaneously onto hydrogen pellets.

The research team had been attempting to boost the power that could be delivered to such fusion targets by fastening small cartridges to Sandia鈥檚 enormous Saturn pulsed power generator. The cartridges worked better than hoped, doubling the generator鈥檚 current. But the researchers nearly overlooked the results, because the dramatic boost in electrical power occurred unexpectedly, only long after the Saturn generator pulse had ended.

The team theorizes that material heated off the cartridge walls blocked the current pulse, allowing electrical energy to build up inside the cartridge before releasing the energy suddenly into the target volume. Such a means of producing high-power pulses from low-power generators could result in substantial savings in future fusion power plants.

鈥淭he work reported here seems to be a significant technological advance in flux compression and opening switches that could potentially accelerate development and reduce capital costs of future fusion power plants,鈥?says Dr. Farhat Beg, Professor of Engineering Physics at the University of California, San Diego, who has been collaborating with Sandia on pulsed power experiments.

In the mid-1980鈥檚, Dr. Felber led a research effort sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy and including scientists at Sandia and in the former Soviet Union. The team showed that hot ionized gas, called plasma, could 鈥榩inch鈥?a magnetic field to what was then the highest value ever produced inside a laboratory, about a hundred million times greater than the Earth鈥檚 magnetic field. Since then, research teams around the world have been trying to use this method of plasma 鈥榤agnetic flux compression鈥?to amplify the high electrical currents needed for fusion.

鈥淭he results of these new experiments on the Saturn generator show great promise for the potential of magnetic flux compression to achieve the high electrical powers and short pulses needed ed hardy hoodies for fusion drivers,鈥?says Dr. Alexander Velikovich, Research Physicist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washingto
